Comprehensive Pain Assessment

Pain is the most frequently reported problem seen at primary care clinics. In the United States, over 50 million people (about 20% of all patients) experience chronic pain. Our expert team can help assess your pain and build a treatment plan tailored to you.

What to expect at your consultation

When booking your first appointment, it's crucial to communicate the type and location of your pain so that the medical team can create a tailored treatment plan. During the initial consultation, your doctor will likely perform a physical exam, pain assessment, and diagnostic tests (such as x-rays or MRIs). They may also inquire about your medical, family, and social history. Keep in mind that each question is designed to help your doctor determine the most suitable treatment for your unique circumstances.

Developing an Effective Pain Management Plan

To create an effective and personalized pain management plan, an accurate pain screening and assessment is crucial. Typically, pain assessment tools are evidence-based and include an evaluation of pain intensity, location, quality, and associated symptoms. By utilizing these tools, healthcare professionals can create an individualized treatment plan that provides optimal pain relief.

At Post Surgical Pain Specialists, we offer a range of treatment options personalized to address each patient's unique pain condition. Our treatments include epidural steroid injections or spinal cord stimulation, both of which are designed to target back pain. Additionally, our Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction studies are used to diagnose a variety of conditions, such as ALS, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy, Peripheral Nerve Disorders, and Radiculopathies, among others. These tests are usually done in combination with each other and are non-invasive.

Once you complete your consultation and tests, your physician will choose the most appropriate treatment for you. Physical therapy, injections, nerve stimulation, or surgery are some of the treatments that physicians may provide. As every patient is unique, the more information you provide, the more effective the examination and tests will be in finding the right treatment for you. Distinguishing Acute from Chronic Pain

A significant aspect of pain assessment is identifying whether the patient experiences acute or chronic pain. Pain that persists for over three months is commonly categorized as chronic. It's crucial to differentiate between acute and chronic pain since the latter may result in centralization, where the central nervous system – not the peripheral – becomes the source of pain. This condition leads to maladaptive symptoms such as hyperalgesia and allodynia becoming more prominent. The texture of the tissues in the affected area becomes hypertonic, ropy, and cold. Chronic pain is often characterized as dull and achy rather than sharp.
